Why Choose Non-12-Step Rehab?
Addiction is not a one-size-fits-all problem. Yet there is a single treatment method that dominates the industry: the 12 Steps. Not surprisingly, 12 Step treatment doesn’t work for every single person. For some, they will try a 12 Step rehab, but still end up relapsing. Others may be seeking treatment for the first time, but already know the 12 Steps aren’t their cup of tea. If these situations describe you, we say welcome — welcome to the wonderful world of a Non 12 Step rehab.
Here, we don’t label people as addicts or alcoholics. We don’t think your only identity should be tied to your addiction. And we don’t think your addiction is a lifelong sentence — we believe you can learn the skills to shed your unhealthy tendencies and replace them with strong self-regulation practices.
Here we believe in personalized therapy and treatment plans, customized to what’s going to work best for you. We know the toxicity of shame, and how rehashing our past failures can be counterproductive to our healing. We think you do have power over your situation, and we empower you to take your life back.
Most importantly, we know you’ve been doing the best you can. And now, we’re here to help you overcome your addiction and come out the other side a stronger person.

What Is Non-12-Step Rehab?
Non 12 Step programs include any kind of treatment modalities that do not adhere to the rules of the 12 Steps (the philosophy originally created for Alcoholics Anonymous).
To be fair, this doesn’t define Non 12 Step very well. If something is a “non” something, it doesn’t really make it a “something.”
For example, if I tell you I’m a non-accountant, does that really tell you anything about my actual job?
For this reason, the pool of treatment models under the umbrella term “Non 12 Step” are drastically different from one another. When seeking treatment, this makes it even more important to ask specific questions about their therapy methodology and how exactly they’ll help you overcome your addiction.
Benefits of a Non-12 Step Rehab Center
A top-notch Non 12 Step center uses several different experiential therapies to break down the walls you’ve put up. They help you discover what’s really driving your substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. They guide you in developing new self-regulation skills to navigate your fight-or-flight responses (which have driven your addictive behavior in the past).
They want to open your eyes to the many beautiful and wonderful things you have to offer the world, while encouraging you that you do have the power to change how you think and act. Their staff will help you discover, or rediscover, your life’s passion. And when things get tough, they’ll sit with you and help you navigate your emotions. They’ll provide a nonjudgmental ear to listen to your struggles, without condemning what you’ve done in the past.
Most importantly, they’ll show you how to release from the idea that you are sentenced to this addiction for the rest of your life.

The Difference Between a 12-Step & Non 12-Step Program
There are many reputable, traditional drug rehab programs that have good track records for helping their clients get sober. While getting sober is a crucial step, it is only the first stage of the recovery process.
To create long-lasting change — and sustained sobriety — you have to learn how to stop your endless pattern of self-criticism. This is where most rehab programming falls short. The inability to stop these patterns is why people who have been to traditional drug or alcohol treatment programs, even people who have years of AA and NA meetings behind them, still relapse.
Non 12 Step counselors know how to help you identify even the most deeply buried emotional pain. They can teach you how to release that pain and overcome those deep issues.
Non 12 Step treatment centers also create a customized treatment plan dedicated to what’s going to be most effective for you. Maybe you don’t believe in a higher power — no problem. Or maybe you have PTSD — they’ll make sure to allocate specific therapeutic techniques for overcoming trauma.
With the guidance from strong Non 12 Step therapists, you can take charge of your own core beliefs, your urges, your emotions, and your choices.

Why Others Still Choose 12-Step Treatment
If 12 Step rehabs don’t work for a lot of people, how come they still go to them? Well, it often comes down to a matter of prevalence, availability, and resources.
More Well-Known
The 12-Step treatment model was the first mass recovery method offered in the United States way back in 1935. Non 12-Step programs, like SMART Recovery and Women for Sobriety, started establishing themselves in the mid-1970s — giving the 12 Step method a 40-year head start.
Because of this increased popularity, most of us know someone who has been to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting or a 12 Step rehab. And even though their experiences may not have been stellar, it still makes the 12 Step method feel familiar.
Availability
Since the 12 Step model is more prevalent, there are more 12 Step rehabs. This means that it can be more difficult to get into the available Non-12 Step rehabs. When someone is needing addiction treatment right away, they may choose to forego their preferred treatment style in order to be treated right away.
Resources
Since 12 Step was the only recovery method for so long, many government-run centers adopted 12 Step programming. This means that people who don’t have abundant resources often have no choice but to attend these low-cost or free 12 Step drug or alcoholism treatment programs.
However, Non 12 Step rehab centers have been gaining popularity in recent years, offering an alternative for people that know 12 Step isn’t the most effective treatment method for them.

Unique Experiential Therapy
We operate under the idea that you should be an active participant in your therapy. Many of the tools we teach you are healthy self-regulation skills to replace your current, unhealthy ones.
For example, when you feel anxious — instead of going to grab a drink, you utilize Mindful Inquiry instead — now, you’re asking yourself why you’re thinking these anxious thoughts. And you question if they’re actually true.
When you use self-regulation tools like this consistently, you begin making new pathways in your brain. Over time, your default way of responding shifts to a much healthier behavior.
Am I Ready to Make the Leap to Non 12 Step?
The traditional 12-step approach to recovery is well-intended and offers several ways to manage your addiction issues, like the idea of support groups and connecting with others at meetings. Where this program falls short, however, is in its failure to address the emotional pain and core beliefs which led you to your drug addiction in the first place.
Rather than seeing yourself at war with drugs and alcohol, which may leave you feeling powerless, ask yourself this question:
“Am I ready to face what I’ve tried so hard to avoid?”
At the same time, we understand if you want to transition the new into the old. If you feel in harmony with 12-step, yet you want to go much, much deeper — we do accommodate 12-step adherents. We’ll take you to groups and support your working of the steps, while introducing you to powerful, core healing work to end your struggles once and for all.

Non 12 Step Therapies & Recovery Tools
So what will you be doing in your days at a Non 12 Step rehab? Learning tools and strategies to change your addictive patterns.
You’ll learn how to navigate your fight-or-flight response, so you don’t automatically pull out your go-to negative behavior. You’ll learn how to release anxiety and calmly self-regulate. And you’ll learn how to let go your shame and silence that self-critiquing voice in your head.
We see that this isn’t a simple Stimulus — Response scenario; if it was, all three people would have responded the same way.
Each person responded differently because they have developed different beliefs throughout their lives.
Maybe John grew up learning that being tough is the only way to act. Or Kelly has trauma from an abusive relationship. Or Barb experienced the loss of a loved one that made her reevaluate how she perceives others.
Regardless of the reason, all three of them adopted these beliefs to take care of themselves. The problem is, most of our beliefs were adopted a long time ago. So, when we don’t question our beliefs, we end up using those outdated beliefs that don’t hold true anymore.
These beliefs are often the silent drivers behind our addictions. They influence how we talk down to ourselves or burst out at others. When we begin to question — and release — these patterned ways of thinking, we can begin to change our behavior.
How Beliefs Drive Our Addictions
Many of us don’t fully understand how much our beliefs (about others and ourselves) impact our addictive behavior.
Let’s unpack this idea. Now, many of us have heard of Stimulus — Response. If A happens, B happens. If I poke a hole in the bottom of my cup, water will leak out.
Stimulus/Belief/Response is based on the idea that we all react differently to a stimulus (or situation) based on the beliefs we hold.
For example, say someone cuts in front of each of the following people in line.
- John becomes angry and yells at them.
- Kelly becomes nervous, suddenly anxious at the thought of confrontation.
- Barb blesses the line cutter — believing they must have had a very good reason to jump in front.
Mindful Inquiry — A Lifelong Self-Regulation Tool
One way to create this change is by becoming aware of why you think the way you do. When you’re aware, you notice what’s working and what’s not.
By using the evidence-based tool of Mindful Inquiry (MI), for example, you can adjust your beliefs and your behavior naturally.
During a Mindful Inquiry session, you will come to realize that you have all the answers and solutions to your dilemmas. You are the explorer — and at the same time — the subject being explored. The counselor is merely your guide, holding the lantern for you. There are no right or wrong answers, because there is no judgment of what is right. Both you and the counselor will be in full acceptance of what plays out in the present moment.
Mindful Inquiry is based entirely on respect for your own innate wisdom; therefore, the counselor will not offer advice.
This is a foreign idea for many people who have been to cognitive behavioral therapy. Trust that you have the answers within you. No one knows you better than you know yourself.
The wonder of Mindful Inquiry is that, once you practice it enough, you can use it on yourself. You get to a point where you no longer need the counselor leading you along. This ability is a lifelong asset to helping you live a joyful, sober life.
How To Use Breathwork in Recovery
• To create long-term results, you need to create a daily practice
• Breath allows you to create space after experiencing a trigger
• Through this space comes clarity
Meditation & Conscious Breath
To create long-term results, you need to create a daily practice that helps you maintain a self-regulated mindset. Meditation is a favorite of many people, along with breathing techniques.
At our program, we teach our clients Conscious Breathing. This mindful breath technique trains our minds to be in the present moment, rather than worrying about the past or future. We use it to help you become aware of how your mind tends to jump rapidly from one thought to another. The simple discipline of focusing on your breath brings you back to the present moment.
Our clients notice that after each conscious breathing session, they experience reduced anxiety and feel more centered and grounded. This is a powerful tool to incorporate into your self-care routine to support your mental health and recovery far beyond the duration of the program.
